The first half was full of action from an England supporters point of view. The Tongan fan may have thought a little differently. Two out of three of Englands penalty tries were awarded in this half as well as a Jordan Crane try. Clegg converted all tries and also scored a penalty. Despite the half time score being 24-0, the amount of handling errors prevented England from getting more tries. Te three charge-downs England made weren't capitalized upon as well. Gloucester's trio made a solid impact, with Sharples showing his pace but Trinder took some knocks and didn't perform to his full potential. Although Attwood wasn't seen much, he worked hard but the same couldn't be said for, Botha, his second row partner who caused many of Saxons' handling errors.

But Stuart Lancasters half time team talk must have made an impact as the errors stopped and both sides looked more lively after the lull towards the end of the first half. The third and final penalty try was awarded to England by referee, Roman Poite and Clegg did convert as well as adding a penalty. Twelvetrees also scored but then received a yellow card. Tonga also succeeded in making two tries - one from Koloamatangi and Timani scored Tonga's first.
