As expected, Wales coach Warren Gatland was appointed as the Lions coach for the 2013 Australia tour. The New Zealander played a heavy part in the backroom staff on the 2009 tour, and therefore knows what is expected of him - a series win against the Aussies.

As soon as the Kiwi was announced as coach, he expressed a desire to work with Wilkinson. 'Jonny' is plying his trade in moneybags Toulon, so would a huge outsider to be included in the tour squad.

So who else may be an unexpected member of the Lions tour team?

Jonny Wilkinson (Toulon):

Having retired from international rugby before the 6 Nations, Wilko has only club from to rely on. But with Gatland expressing a desire to work with him, JW may be favoured over others who may be expecting to be included. But, his club form may have to be exceptional, as he isn't playing in Britain, but the 2001 Lions tourist will be one to keep an eye on this season.

Steffon Amitage (Toulon):

Another Englishman playing in the south of France, the younger brother of Delon. Steffon is a animal - strong runner and huge hitter the back rower may fancy his chances. Having played for England 7s and XV, he has experience for a young man, but will his unpredictable form or drugs scandal stop the Trinidad born beast having a shot at a tour place?

Gethin Jenkins (Toulon):

Another Brit sunning it up it southern France! Jenkins would have been a 100% shoe in for the 2013 tour a few months ago, but by signing for Toulon, the 2001 and 2005 tourist may have scuppered his chances at a third. The club at first was reluctant to release him, but with Gatland knowing how good a player he is (through Wales), the New Zealander will be sure to negotiate with the French club.

James Haskell (London Wasps):

The 'banter god' (as he likes to be known) is definitely an outsider. Although playing in England, the Wasps player needs to hit some good form as he is out of contention for England - never mind the Lions! The back rower has been played in France, New Zealand Japan over past few years, so getting back into the England set up is a must!

James Hook (Perpignan):

The versatile Welshman is playing for USAP in the Top 14, so Gatland may face the same problems (if selecting Hook) for the tour as he would if selecting Jenkins. Hook barely featured for the 2009 Lions, but is an experienced tourist non-the-less, so having his experience and versatility on the tour would be a huge asset. However, poor club form last season and now an out of favour with Wales, his slim chances of making the squad are getting smaller each week.

But as with any Lions your squad selections, there will be upset players and ecstatic players - but if Gatland is granted access to select French based players, there may be more upsets/controversial than usual.
