The last time we gave you an update on the fast-moving world of #rugbyunited was back in August. Five months later, the quickly developing brand is getting bigger and bigger and they’ve got exciting plans for the future.

The strong link between Scrum Five and #rugbyunited was once again tightened as our editor caught up with Trevor Large, the founder of #rugbyunited, for an hour and a half discussion about what’s ahead for the brand. So, without further ado, here’s what unfolded…

We discovered that things have been developing very quickly. The highly popular #RugbyClubs network has been a pivotal part of development and they are building big connections with the RFU and Premiership Rugby as well as working at various events across the country.

“#RugbyClubs has been a really big thing for us this year. Our desire to look at the rugby clubs was really about growing the whole brand of #rugbyunited.

Rather than me, Rich, Nick and Gemma [key #RUTeam members] going to all these events what we really want is get our #RugbyClubs managers involved.”

“This year we’ve got two big fundamental events that we’re attending. We are part of Bournemouth 7s and are their preferred digital supplier this year which we’re really excited about.

As part of that deal we’re putting a team in for one of their amateur cups. Rich Church-Keen’s running that and he’s absolutely thrilled to bits, he’s really excited about it,” Trevor explained.

Continuing, Trevor said: “We’re recruiting in true Barbarian style. We’ve got people coming from overseas to represent #rugbyunited at Bournemouth 7s so it’ll be a true nomadic, barbarian feel to it and we think that’s quite exciting.

We’re also taking a team down to Lanzarote at the beginning of May. Lanzarote run a big beach festival and again we’re really excited about that too. It’s been really good fun getting a team out to Lanzarote.”

Almost every professional club in Europe as well as most national sides across the globe have a #rugbyunited supporter’s account setup and they allow the key figures of the #RUTeam to reach out and use their network to build contacts and grow the brand.

At present, #rugbyunited is receiving 150 unique users per day and have 50/50 usage across mobile and desktop platforms.

“We sometimes get asked is #rugbyunited a business, is it not a business, do we make money, do we not make money?

“#rugbyunited isn’t a business. Would we like it to be a business one day? Of course we’d love to do it full time and make our living for it but at the moment it’s not a business,” Trevor said.

“We are setup to handle the commercial opportunities that come our way as a business but through 2012 #rugbyunited spent £48 and earned nothing. Would we like to be a business? Ideally one day.”

But what can be expected next from #rugbyunited? Well, #RugbyRoots is on the horizon and when it arrives it should be big.

“One thing that’s big on our agenda is #RugbyRoots which is a big flagship project and will effectively focus a lot more around amateur rugby. We’re hoping to get that off the ground this year.”

Sadly, not much more can be revealed about their exciting plans at this stage but later on this year #RugbyRoots should be close to completion so keep an eye out.

Scrum Five’s link with #rugbyunited is as strong as ever and we should be providing you with more exclusive insight in the near future.
