- Anglo Welsh Cup: Indiscipline costs Ospreys
23 October 2011
LOCATION THE BREWERY FIELD / DATE OCTOBER 22 2011 / COMPETITION LV=CUP ROUND 2
Northampton had their international stars back from World Cup duty but the Ospreys were less fortunate as many of the Welsh squad still remained in New Zealand following a defeat to Australia. A fantastic performance with the boot from Morgan wasn't enough to defeat a Northampton side who scored four tries on the day and with two sinbinnings the Ospreys side only made it worse for themselves.
Morgan kicked two early penalties to put his side in a 6-0 lead. Lamb replied with one of his own and Newport were hit with a harsh blow as Tom Smith was sinbinned on the 19th minute.
The Saints capitalized on their advantage and Artemyev went over for the game's first try. But Matthew Morgan kept his side in the game with another brace of penalties, giving Ospreys a 12-10 lead. However, Just as Smith returned, scrum half, Tom Habberfield was sinbinned. The home side held strong with a last minute Sonny Parker try that gave them a comfortable lead of 19 points to 10 going into the break.
Again, Saints used their one man advantage well but this time with more strength as Hartley went over for two early second half tries with Calum Clark adding a third. Ryan Lamb converted two of the tries giving Northampton a 27-19 lead that looked unbeatable.
The Ospreys could do little and for the remainder of the match they only scored one more penalty. With victory looking certain for the away team, Stephen Myler rubbed salt in the wounds and kicked a final penalty on the 80 minute mark to give Northampton a 32-22 win.
