In a high tempo thriller, Newport Gwent Dragons travelled to Wycombe to face London Wasps. None of the spectators would have expected such an intense, high tempo thriller between two sides who both fought to the death to try and steal victory.
Steffan Jones was the hero for the Dragons, kicking twenty points for his side and taking them to a victory that seemed unlikely as they were behind on the 78th minute. Wasps put up a fight that on any other day probably would have got them a win but they couldn't overthrow a powerful Newport side.
Dragons prop, Phil Price got his side off the mark with an early try on the three minute mark. With a five point lead, Newport conceded a penalty which Wasps' fly half, Ryan Davis, slotted over. But the visitors replied and Jones kicked both a penalty and a drop goal giving the Dragons an eight point lead.
Tom Varndell and John Hart both scored tries for Wasps which were both converted by Davis. However, Newport responded once again and Amos closed off the half with a try meaning the away side led by 21-17 going into the break.Filipo gave Wasps the lead early on in the 2nd half with a try. It wasn't converted but Wasps led by 22 points to 21. But Jones replied with six points from his boot and with seven minutes left, victory looked certain for the Dragons.
Joe Simpson had plans of his own. With just three minutes left of a thrilling LV= Cup encounter, he went over the line to score a crucial try for the home side. Robinson converted and Wasps held a 29-27 lead.
In the final minute of the game, a very well played Steffan Jones kept his nerve to kick over a vital penalty which would send Newport to victory.
