Dan Parks - ENG v SCO
Dan Parks shows his frustration.
Chris Ashton confirmed victory in the dying minutes to end Scotland's chances of reaching the knock-out stages. Scotland deserved the win after they dominated in the first half but Martin Johnson's half time team talk must have inspired England to go out prepared for the hard battle that awaited them.

Scotland started strongly but both sides remained equal in the opening quarter. Ruaridh Jackson came off early with a hamstring problem and Parks replaced him. Parks shrugged off any questions about his kicking ability following Scotland's loss to Argentina by opening with two Scotland penalties.
Wilkinson had another shaky performance.
Wilkinson unfortunately hadn't shrugged off his previous kicking woes as he missed three successive penalties at the start of the second quarter. England perked up a little in the closing ten minutes and they got the ball into the hands of the backs who hadn't seen much ball for the first thirty minutes. But Wilkinson managed to score one before the break narrowing Scotland's lead to three points.

A late drop goal attempt from Dan Parks failed to go over so the half ended with Scotland holding a lead of 6 points to 3.

England came out a lot more explosive in the second half and Delon Armitage made a dangerous run down the wing. He did the same last weekend and it gave England a try but against Scotland's strong defence it came to nothing. Paterson gave Scotland the elusive 8 point lead they needed but it lasted very little time.

Wilkinson's kicking didn't improve too much as he sliced another kick wide. Foden however remained strong and denied Scotland a try just in front of the England line. Wilkinson's shaky performance took an upwards turn a few minutes after as he struck a drop goal through the posts narrow Scotland's lead.

And it did look like Wilkinson's performance had finally turned around as he scored a penalty to effectively end Scotland's chances of reaching the quarter finals. After this Scotland could do no more and Ashton dived in the corner in the closing minutes. Flood converted sending England to the quarter-finals and Scotland back home.
