- Who will replace Martin Johnson?
22 November 2011
Since Martin Johnson announced his resignation as England manager last week, much speculation has arisen as to who will replace the 2003 World Cup winner. Whoever comes in will have to be ruthless with the RFU in assuring that the future of the England Rugby team is not in jeopardy due to the failings within the organisation.
A few names have come up but many have been ruled out already. It leaves possibilities such as Stuart Lancaster the England Saxons boss, and Jim Mallinder who is currently in charge at Franklins Gardens with Northampton Saints.
Jim Mallinder has a reputation he would probably like to maintain. Having taken
Immediate candidates were the likes of Dean Ryan, Nick Mallett and Clive Woodward but they were all ruled out fairly quickly. Conor O’Shea said he was happy at Harlequins and he is probably right! Who would leave an in-form Premiership club for an international side whose management is in tatters? Stuart Lancaster has worked at Leeds Carnegie but currently heads up the England Saxons side which is brimming with young talent. So the question remains, who will it be?
However, one thing remains uncertain amidst this deliberation is what is the job on offer? During the press conference last Wednesday, a journalist questioned Rob Andrew on what his job actually is within the RFU. He couldn't give a clear answer and that was no surprise to those watching. The same question comes up when discussing the possible England ‘manager’ – what job am I going to do? People described Martin Johnson as the England manager but not head coach or director of rugby. The term ‘manager’ is very much associated with football and is too vague to describe the actual job needed.
