- Aviva Premiership: Worcester 13-32 Leicester
27 December 2011
Leicester Tigers powered past the Worcester Warriors at Sixways with a four try victory putting them into 5th place in the Aviva Premiership table.
It took the 9 time English champions just 22 minutes to gain a lead of 17 points that under normal circumstances would have been hard to come by for the entirety of the first half, if not the match. However, this wasn’t normal circumstances; this was a Leicester side featuring the likes of Toby Flood, Manu Tuilagi, Ben Youngs along with a whole host of up-and-coming players.
Newly promoted Worcester Warriors faced a tough challenge at the break when they trailed byan almost unsurpassable 20-3.

Star man for Leicester, Toby Flood, said “I think the guys were outstanding today in terms of how we approached the game and how we went about it – that was the most important thing.”
He added “It was a case of us getting down to it and we started really well which is something we should be proud of. But credit toWorcester certainly in that second half for making it a real scrap. We started so well and it made it easier for us.”
Two early Leicester tries and a couple of penalty goals provided Richard Cockerill’s men with 20 points in the first half whilst Worcester could manage only a single penalty goal which came from Carlisle. Louis Deacon and Marcel Garvey went over for their respective sides in the early part of the second half and Horacio Agulla rounded off the match with a self-made try.
Toby Flood’s seventh minute penalty was sandwiched by two Leicester tries, one from the ever-improving, Matt Smith, and one from Flood himself, who put in an impressive all round performance.
Along with another penalty goal and two conversions from Leicester and a single penalty from Carlisle for the hosts meant the Tigers led 20-3 at the half time break.
Marcel Garvey sparked a Worcester comeback 11 minutes into the second half when he crossed the line to close the gap to 20-13 but a Louis Deacon try after a full team effort brought the scores to 25-13, demolishing what was left of Worcester's hopes of victory.
Horacio Agulla, who chipped the ball past the Worcester defenders to score a beautifully crafted self-made try, rounded off a Leicester victory.
The win puts the Tigers into 5th place whilst Worcester remain in 11th, above bottom place Newcastle, with 17 points.
