- Edinburgh and Cardiff proceed in Pool Two
22 January 2012
Edinburgh beat London Irish to ensure a home quarter-final
whilst Cardiff Blues only just saw off Racing Metro 92 in a tense encounter at
the Cardiff City Stadium.
Edinburgh put four tries past London Irish at Murrayfield
and the first came ten minutes into the match when Tim Visser crossed the line.
Greig Laidlaw converted and added an additional eight points before the break.
Adrian Jarvis only managed two penalty goals for Irish in
the first period of the game and along with a try for Edinburgh full-back, Jim
Thompson, it left the visitors trailing by 20 points to 6 at the break.
All of London Irish’s substitutes were brought on in the build-up
to their try. Jonathan Joseph flew down the wing and exchanged the ball with
Adam Thompstone who returned it allowing the 20-year-old to score.
Edinburgh
bounced back instantly with tries from Talei and Jones which were both converted
by Laidlaw meaning Edinburgh won the game by 34 points to 11 putting them at
the top of Pool 2 and anticipating a home quarter-final.
But Cardiff Blues also sought the elusive home quarter-final
and needed a big win over Racing Metro 92 to secure that victory.
It was points galore in the first half as penalties and
tries gathered up a tally of 47 points in total during the opening 40 minutes. Wisniewski
kicked a penalty to get the scoreboard rolling but Cardiff responded with a try
from scrum-half, Lloyd Williams, not to mention Lee Halfpenny who scored five
points within the first ten minutes.
Matavesi was next to score for Racing and a sharp one-handed
pass from Sireli Bobo opened up the Cardiff defence and allowed Matavesi to
touch the ball down. Descons kicked a penalty goal for the visiting side which
was followed by a Bobo try.
But before Bobo crossed the line Cardiff were able to score
an additional ten points. After Halfpenny’s penalty goal, Cuthbert evaded tackle
from Estebanez to score and when Halfpenny converted it put the hosts in a six
point lead. Two further penalties for each side were kicked before the break
but Cuthbert scored his second in the opening minutes of the second half which
offered Cardiff an early boost in the second period of the game.
Racing Metro scored just six points for the rest of the
match and apart from the conversion of Cuthbert’s early second half try,
Halfpenny could only do the same. Cardiff looked to score a final try to ensure
a home quarter-final but as 80 minutes ticked over, Racing Metro made a last
gasp break which was just dealt with by the Cardiff defence, putting an end to
a scrappy Round 6 match. The full time score was Cardiff 36-30 Racing Metro.
The pool finishes with Edinburgh top and third seed in the
competition, Cardiff qualifying in second as best runner-up, London Irish in
third and Racing Metro narrowly behind Irish in fourth.
